Player: Tom Watson Event: Open Championship Venue: Turnberry Year: 1977 Quite simply, this is the best Major ever seen. The established master, Jack Nicklaus, went up against the young pretender, Tom Watson, over four days of effective matchplay. Both scored 68, 70, 65 over the first three days in which no quarter was asked nor given in glorious heatwave conditions. Watson then fired another 65, one better than his rival, to claim his second Open but he had to fire his approach into the 72nd hole to less than two feet in order to finally shake off his redoubtable opponent, who himself finished 10 strokes ahead of the field.
